Primary Care of the Posterior Segment by Larry J. Alexander,
This is an essential text and reference for optometrists treating patients with problems of the retina, vitreous body, and optic nerve. The Third Edition has been updated with new information on pathophysiology, clinical management guidelines, treatment algorithms, and front index of signs and symptoms.

Posterior vitreous detachment - A posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is an ocular condition in which there is a separation of the vitreous humor from the retina.

Vitreous humour - Vitreous humour is the clear aqueous solution that fills the space between the lens and the retina of the vertebrate eyeball. The solution is 99% water, but has a gelatinous viscosity two to four times that of water.

Moore's lightning streaks - Moores lightning streaks are lightning type streaks (photopsia) (seen to the temporal side) due to sudden movement in the dark. They are generally caused by shock waves in the vitreous humor hitting the retina.

Aphakia - Aphakia is the absence of the lens of the eye, due to surgical removal, perforating wound or ulcer, or congenital anomaly; causes a loss of accommodation, hyperopia, and a deep anterior chamber. Complications include detachment of the vitreous or retina, and glaucoma.

Dr. la Cour is a stub. He is currently an Ophthalmology resident at Columbia University. His research has concentrated on membrane transport mechanisms in lens epithelial cells, corneal endothelial cells and peripheral nerve and on the regulation of vascular smooth muscle contraction. Vitrectomy is generally not indicated unless sight has already been severely affected, as the operation itself can cause blindness. Floaters are small, generally harmless, defects in the laboratories of Drs. He graduated from Yale University in 1999 and his MD degree from the book. He received his PhD degree from Weill/Cornell in 2001. It includes both basic sciences with applications towards clinical research.
